The white roofs of the houses will slow down the phenomenon of global warming the planet due to the greenhouse effect and reduce power consumption, says Nobel laureate physicist and secretary of the American Board of Energy Steven Chu.
The Steven Chu, speaking in London at a conference on climate change said that if paint the roofs of the houses in the world and sidewalks to lighten colors, it would have a positive impact on global warming.
This move, said Nobel laureate scientist would have the same effect as the cars cleared away all the planet's roads for 11 years.
The Chu said that the people who live in hot climates such as Greece, have conceived the idea with the white roofs of houses hundreds of years ago, referring to the Cycladic architecture. Paint their houses bright for solar radiation reflected away from their homes to stay cool.
The idea is simple, a reflection of the sun on white surfaces contribute positively to global warming, because the solar rays penetrate the Earth's atmosphere back into space back.
If a house has roof color white, the sun's rays will be reflected back into the atmosphere rather than warm the roof and then the house and land.
In the case of a typical black roof the sunlight converted directly into heat. The same applies to cars that are black compared with white, but the asphalt road that is heated faster than the light colored pavements.
The white roofs of the houses make homes cooler thereby reducing the use of air conditioning and emissions of carbon dioxide.
In fact if you paint with white roof 1.000 square meters, would be cut CO2 emissions by 10 tonnes and expenses resulting from the use of air conditioning by 20% said the teacher. That would have been saved in the U.S. at least 1 billion U.S. dollars a year, after the 90% ceiling is black.
The U.S. has already begun to offer incentives to owners in Georgia and Florida to paint the white roofs of houses. In July the California law will require that roofs of houses should be light colored.
